Ebook The Effects of Differing Levels of Protein Consumption on Renal Function in Young Compared to Older Adults

Submitted by wulan on Sat, 08/29/2009 - 02:18

Diets emphasizing restricted carbohydrate and increased protein intake experienced a resurgence in popularity in the US in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. While consumer interest in these diets has since begun to wane, a number of recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of a high protein intake combined with moderate intakes of fat and carbohydrates (30% protein, 20-30% fat, 40-50% carbohydrate) in weight loss, appetite control, and improved blood glucose levels. However, there remains conflicting evidence regarding the impact of a high protein intake on overall kidney health, which extends to acid-base balance and bone health.

An increase in protein intake has been shown to increase renal plasma flow and to increase the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). It is accepted that glomerular hyperfiltration resulting from consumption of a high-protein diet can cause progressive kidney damage in people who already suffer from kidney disease; however there is controversy over the effects of a high-protein (HP) diet in those with healthy kidney functio. Additionally, HP diets produce a marked acid load in the form of excess sulfates from the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. To maintain acid-base homeostasis the kidney increases its excretion of the acid load, and any failure on the part of the kidney to excrete the acid will lead to metabolic acidosis. Because aging is associated with a decline in kidney function, in the form of decreased GFR and decreased ability to excrete acid, examining the effects of a HP diet in older people is of particular interest.

Ebook Forecast Accuracy Uncertainty and Momentum

Submitted by puput on Thu, 01/06/2011 - 03:00

Forecasting the future cashflows of a company is crucial to valuing its stock price. However, generating these forecasts is a complex task that often results in differences of opinion. Nonetheless, cashflow forecasts help investors to form conditional expectations of future cashflow growth. Comprehensive surveys by Clemen (1989) and Diebold and Lopez (1996) document that forecast combinations are superior to individual forecasts. When optimally combining multiple cashflow forecasts into an aggregate estimate, investors should assign more weight to forecasts issued by more accurate information sources.

Ebook Effects Of Diet, Exercise, Reinforcement And Self Monitoring On Weight In Overweight Children Loss

Submitted by wulan on Wed, 08/19/2009 - 02:28

The condition for obesity or being overweight is described as an excessive accumulation of fat in the body or an increase in weight beyond that considered desirable with regard to age, height, and bone structure. An individual or child of more than normal weight is considered obese. Overweight is a more general term signifying excessive and burdensome weight.

Obesity is a common problem in our country and in the world today. Particularly it is associated with the United States, which enjoys a higher standard of living than many countries. This higher living standard directly affects the eating habits of people, and people in the United States tend to be overweight. Being overweight effects physical and mental health in adults and children (Miller-Keane 1.97.8). Many over-weight children tend to grow up to be overweight adults, thus carrying the significant physical and mental health problems associated with overweightedness with them into adulthood. At least 25% of all children are obese, and more than 80% of overweight children become overweight adults (Brownell, 1978). Too much weight, or too many pounds, are a strain on the body, and can eventually shorten one's life span. The over-weight child who does not control his weight and carries the condition with him into adulthood invites a number of unnecessary complications.
