Ebook Aggregate real exchange rate persistence through the lens of sectoral data

Submitted by puput on Fri, 12/17/2010 - 06:54

Most of the empirical literature on purchasing power parity (PPP) and real exchange rate (RER) persistence focuses on the analysis of aggregate RER data, where the latter are constructed with aggregate price indices. After years of close scrutiny, the general consensus is that aggregate RERs may converge to parity in the long run, but that the rate at which this happens is very slow, with half-lives (HL) in the range of 3 to 5 years (Frankel and Rose, 1996, Lothian and Taylor, 1996 and Murray and Papell, 2005). Thus, while the high volatility of real exchange rates could potentially be explained by monetary or financial shocks, the rate of reversion to parity seems to be too slow to be compatible with plausible nominal rigidities, giving rise to the so-called PPP puzzle (Rogoff, 1996).

Submitted by puput on Mon, 12/13/2010 - 07:42

There are stark differences in schooling and retirement decisions across time and space. In the U.S. in 1900, 60 percent of men aged 65 or older were in the labor force, and the average worker had 5.4 years of schooling. In 2000, only 20 percent of men aged 65 or older were in the labor force, while the average worker had 12.4 years of schooling. Also in 2000, the labor force participation rate for men aged 65 or older was only 5 percent for a group of European countries. For these countries, the average years of schooling was 9.4 years.

Submitted by antoq on Thu, 07/02/2009 - 04:45

When diabetic nephropathy is diagnosed, the goal is to retain kidney function for as long as possible. To help maintain kidney function, and delay the progression of kidney disease, optimal blood glucose and blood pressure control are cornerstones of treatment (1). When a person is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) a referral to a nephrologist should be initiated and management by a renal medical care team advocated.

The “Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease – Kidney Care” section, in the Beyond the Basics (BTB) meal planning resource, provides an outline about kidney disease in people with diabetes, with an emphasis on prevention. The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines for the health professional for adapting the BTB for people with diabetes and kidney disease. It can help registered dietitians (RD) counsel people with diabetes about their diet for both diabetes and kidney disease.
