PDF Ebook Central Bank Communication on Financial Stability

Submitted by antoq on Tue, 05/03/2011 - 05:44

Central banks regularly communicate about financial stability issues, by publishing Financial Stability Reports (FSRs) and through speeches and interviews. The paper asks how such communications affect financial markets. Building a unique dataset, it provides an empirical assessment of the reactions of stock markets to more than 1000 releases of FSRs and speeches by 37 central banks over the past 14 years. The findings suggest that FSRs have a significant and potentially long-lasting effect on stock marketreturns, and also tend to reduce market volatility. Speeches and interviews, in contrast, have little effect on market returns and do not generate a volatility reduction during tranquil times, but have had a substantial effect during the 2007-10 financial crisis.

The textile industry has traditionally been one of the largest industries of the United States (US) economy. Escalating production prices and the threat of increased competition, especially from the Asia Pacific region, has meant that foreign producers have gained a greater share of the United States market (Datamonitor, 2004). Additionally, the global elimination of quotas at the end of 2004 has led to greater competition (Technopak, 2007). In today’s competitive global textile and apparel marketplace, industries in developed countries are challenged to provide differentiated products that provide alternatives to low-margin undifferentiated, commodity products.

Ebook Market Institutions, Labor Market Dynamics and Productivity in Argentina during the 1990s

Submitted by wulan on Tue, 05/25/2010 - 07:24

This paper seeks to shed light on the effects of economic reforms and policy shocks on the dynamics of manufacturing employment and productivity in Argentina during the 1990s. This decade was landmarked by macroeconomic stabilization, deregulation, privatization, labor market reforms and trade and capital account liberalization.

Additionally, the economy was subject to frequent and significant policy shocks, especially in the area of taxation, and to financial and terms of trade shocks as well. This period featured a cumulative decline in manufacturing employment. At the same time, labor productivity grew at a large average rate. Gross job creation, destruction and reallocation displayed significant fluctuations, suggesting that the labor market was highly responsive to price and policy shocks and to structural reforms.
