PDF Ebook Analyzing Immunotherapy and Chemotherapy of Tumors

Submitted by antoq on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 08:42

The development of immunotherapy intreating certain forms of cancer has recently become an exciting new focus in cancer research. In some preliminary studies, immunotherapyhas been found to be most effective when administered in conjunction with chemotherapy[89]. Precisely how various types of immunotherapy work, and how they should optimally be administered, either alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy, is not yet well understood. We propose to contribute to the emerging body of cancer treatmentresearchby developing and analyzing new mathematical models of the treatment of cancer that include vaccine therapy, activated anticancer-cell transfers, and activation protein injections in combination with chemotherapy.

Ebook Organic Diets Significantly Lower Children’s Dietary Exposure to Organophosphorus Pesticides

Submitted by wulan on Thu, 09/17/2009 - 03:40

The National Research Council’s 1993 report entitled “Pesticides in the Diets of Infants and Children” concluded that dietary intake represents the major source of pesticide exposure for infants and children, and this exposure may account for the increased pesticide-related health risks in children compared to adults (NRC 1993). However, direct quantitative assessment of dietary pesticide exposure in children to support this conclusion is no simple task: several studies (Adgate et al. 2000; Fenske et al. 2002; Gordon et al. 1999; MacIntosh et al. 2001) have analyzed pesticides in representative samples of children’s food, and only two have utilized biological monitoring to specifically examine dietary exposures (Curl et al. 2003; MacIntosh et al. 2001).

The paucity of exposure data renders the debate over pesticide related health risks in children controversial (Flower et al. 2004; Garry 2004; Reynold et al. 2005). Nevertheless, those studies have provided valuable information in regard of the evidence of dietary pesticide exposure among children, and have prompted the needs to improve research methods in order to better assess children’s exposure to pesticides through dietary intake.

Ebook Incorporating Ecosystem Considerations Into Fisheries Management: Large Scale Industry Perspectives

Submitted by puput on Wed, 08/19/2009 - 07:06

Internationally, the large scale industry is a diverse group of both shore based and at sea harvesting and processing operations. As with all elements of the fishing industry, the performance of large scale fisheries is controlled by various degrees of governmental and institutional constraints. The record shows that the degree of responsible fisheries practised in any sector of the fishing industry largely depends upon the level of responsibility within government and regulatory institutions, and a commitment to responsible fisheries by the fishing industry.

There are a number of reasons why some fisheries have attracted larger vessels, such as remote fishing grounds, the large size of the resource, the perishable nature of the fish, the need for capital intensive production equipment, and the harsh and dangerous fishing conditions. In this production environment, only large scale fisheries are able to deliver seafood at cost effective prices. Without the economies of scale of the large scale seafood industry, this healthy source of protein would either be left in the water or affordable only to the wealthy.
