Ebook Do Reforms In Transition Economies Affect Foreign Bank Entry?

Submitted by wulan on Fri, 04/16/2010 - 06:53

The growing presence of foreign-owned financial institutions during the 1990s is one of the most striking structural changes in the financial systems of the countries in transition. Currently, on average 60 per cent of the total number of banks is in foreign hands. In some Central Eastern European (CEE), South Eastern European (SEE) and Baltic countries, the share of foreign bank assets relative to total assets of the banking system is even more than 75% (Bol et al., 2002). This ‘takeover’ has occurred within a period of less than ten years. Given the high and growing share of foreign bank ownership, there is a growing need for studies on the reasons for foreign bank entry in transition economies.

The existing literature on foreign bank entry mainly deals with Western European countries, or with the US (Buch, 2000). There are only a few studies focusing on transition economies, but they only consider one country, or a small group of countries (e.g. Galac and Kraft, 2000, for Croatia, and Konopielko, 1999, for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland).

Ebook Entrepreneurial Teams, Optimal Team Size, and Founder Exits

Submitted by puput on Tue, 12/13/2011 - 08:46

Recent studies suggest that continuous innovative change leads to knowledge accumulation and complexity of knowledge, and this causes individuals to opt for specialisation in knowledge (Jones, 2009). As a result, innovation has become task of specialised individuals (Audretsch, 1995; Jones, 2009; Wuchtyetal., 2007). Team formation is desirable when team members gain from complementarities, encourage knowledge transfer of idiosyncratic information, and create synergy (Lazear, 1998; Hamilton et al., 2003; Rose, 2002).

Ebook Perspectives on the Recent Currency Crisis Literature

Submitted by wulan on Fri, 01/15/2010 - 07:45

In the 1990s, currency crises in Europe, Mexico and Southeast Asia have drawn worldwide attention to speculative attacks on government-controlled exchange rates. To improve understanding of these events, research has proceeded on both theoretical and empirical fronts.

The purpose of this paper is to provide some perspective on this research and to relate it to earlier work in the area. The early work, now called first-generation research, responded to currency crises in developing countries such as Mexico (1973-1982) and Argentina (1978-81). These crises were preceded by overly expansive domestic policies. First-generation models show how a fixed exchange-rate policy combined with excessively expansionary pre-crisis fundamentals push the economy into crisis, with the private sector trying to profit from dismantling the inconsistent policies.
