Medical Ebooks: Alcohol and Other Drugs Abuse Treatment
The Department of Corrections (DOC) provides AOD treatment in all of its institutions. In 2007, there were 12,723 individual inmates participating in AOD programs in institutions. The DOC can now identify inmates who are in more than one treatment program, ensuring that they are only counted once towards the overall DOC treatment participant total.
Treatment typically begins with screening and assessment at the Diagnostic and Classification Centers. Based on screenings and assessment results, inmates are recommended to participate in either AOD Outpatient (O/P) treatment or inpatient (TC) treatment.
Inmates learn about the impact of drug and alcohol abuse on their lives, and are introduced to strategies for living addiction-free.
Based upon problem severity, inmates then move on to a variety of outpatient treatment programs, geared towards their specific AOD problems. For example, inmates may receive individual or group counseling in either O/P treatment or TC to develop thinking and living skills that help to divert them from alcohol or
drug use upon their release. Self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Secular Organization for Sobriety, and Narcotics Anonymous are also available to support the treatment inmates have received and to help them maintain abstinence. Inmates often receive
numerous such programs during the course of their incarceration. Inmates needing more intensive treatment may move on to a therapeutic community.
