Planning your medical career a guide to careers support

What is the purpose of this guide? All doctors progressing through training will need to give thought, and dedicate time, to planning their career. This guide aims to provide trainee doctors, in both primary and secondary care, with an overview of the support options that are available to them.

Is this guide for me?
This guide is intended for use by all doctors in London progressing through their medical training; whether you are in your foundation years, or in a specialty grade post.

However, you may find the information and resources contained within this guide useful regardless of what post you are in, or where you are practising medicine.

What will I gain by reading this guide?

This guide will help you understand how to approach the task of career planning, as well as highlighting the different resources and sources of support that can help you through the process.

What will this guide not be able to give me?

This is not a ‘stand-alone’ document that contains all the answers. Equally, it is not intended to replace career advice sessions with your Educational Supervisor or another suitably experienced clinician. However, it will help you prepare for those sessions, so that you can get the most out of them.
