Preventing the rise in overweight and obesity for both children and adults is an urgent priority. Obesity reduces life expectancy on average by 9 years and is responsible for 30,000 deaths a year in England, of which 9000 are premature deaths. Overweight and obesity increases the risk of a wide range of diseases and illnesses including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

This document describes a strategy for monitoring the levels of overweight and obesity, preventing obesity and managing overweight and obesity among children and adults in South Gloucestershire. It includes the rationale and policy framework to support the strategy, which has been developed with contributions from a range of partners. Together they have contributed to mapping current activities and services, helped to identify gaps in service provision and highlighted key actions for effective service delivery.

A number of Local Authority, NHS and school based interventions are being delivered in South Gloucestershire, many of these can contribute to the implementation of this strategy. As there is a scarcity of evidence nationally about preventing and managing obesity, it is recommended that the effectiveness of interventions is reviewed. Additionally partners are encouraged to work towards a more comprehensive and joined up provision of services.

This strategy links to other strategies developed on behalf of the South Gloucestershire Better Health Partnership (BHP) and others developed by the Local Authority or PCT, namely the Food and Health Strategy , Physical Activity Strategy, Activity and Sports Plan , the Children and Young People’s Plan , the Strengthening Communities Strategy and the Joint Local Transport Plan.
