Ebook Earnings and Education in Brazil: Evidence from fhe 1980 Census
Brazil is one of the very few countries in the world that make available "public use" tapes of its decennial census. The 1970 tapes led to several analyses on the economics of education (Berhman and Birdsall, 1983, Psacharopoulos, 1981 and 1983).
With the availability of the 1980 tapes it is now possible to repeat some of the earlier analyses and assess how the returns to investment in schooling have changed within one decade of educational expansion. Also, access to individual data on earnings and other characteristics of the workers permits the testing of several hypotheses on the economics of education that have appeared in the literature in recent years.
The following section gives a description of the sample used in this paper. Section 111 presents the results of fitting a standard human capital earnings function to the 1980 data set and compares them to those referring to 1970. In Section IV the returns to investment in education are disaggregated by level and type of education. Section V reports further disaggregations of the returns to education that relate to alternative labor market theories. The final section draws a series of conclusions from this analysis.
